Our Goals

Virtual Extinction is an Australian NGO confronting digital colonialism, a threat where AI systems trained on scraped data exploit and misrepresent endangered languages. With one language disappearing every fortnight, mainstream AI forces Indigenous languages into incompatible Western frameworks, commodifying sacred knowledge without consent.

Virtual Extinction bridges technology, law, and policy to secure Indigenous data sovereignty. Guided by an Indigenous-majority advisory board, the project delivers grassroots AI literacy toolkits, tech-ethics workshops, and language circles while advocating for global legislative reforms that mandate free, prior, and informed consent in AI development.
